What actually controls thermal performance?
The insulation core is only one part of roof performance. Buyers should evaluate the declared thermal conductivity and the test conditions used for the quoted core, the exact thickness, the metal skins, joints, fasteners, penetrations and installation quality. Thermal bridges or air leakage at laps and penetrations can reduce the performance of the finished roof.
The exterior surface also matters. The U.S. Department of Energy advises buyers to consider solar reflectance, the durability of that reflectance and thermal emittance when selecting roofs for cooling-load reduction. It also notes that results depend on climate, existing insulation and HVAC efficiency.
