Cold storage roof panels are a specialized category within insulated aluminum sandwich panels. Standard warehouse panels are designed to minimize heat gain in a warm building — cold storage panels must prevent heat from entering a refrigerated space where every extra watt of heat translates directly into compressor energy consumption and product integrity risk.

Thickness Selection by Temperature Zone

Temperature Zone Interior Temp Panel Thickness U-Value
Chill / produce room +2°C to +8°C 100mm PIR 0.22 W/m²K
Frozen food storage -18°C 150mm PIR 0.15 W/m²K
Ice cream / deep freeze -25°C 150–200mm PIR 0.15–0.11
Blast freezer -30°C to -35°C 200mm PIR 0.11 W/m²K

Critical Specification Details

Vapor Barrier — Non-Negotiable: Cold storage panels must include a vapor barrier on the warm (exterior) side of the insulation. Without it, water vapor migrates through the panel driven by the vapor pressure differential, condenses inside the insulation, and destroys PIR performance within 2–3 years. Specify minimum 0.2mm PE vapor barrier, or use aluminum foil-faced PIR boards that act as their own vapor barrier.
  • Panel joints: EPDM compression gaskets at all longitudinal and transverse joints — silicone sealant alone is inadequate for cold storage thermal cycling (-30°C to +45°C differential in Gulf climate)
  • Thermal bridges: Eliminate all metal-to-metal contact at panel perimeters and fastener locations. Use thermal break tapes at purlin interfaces
  • Panel length: Limit to 6m maximum for cold storage applications (thermal bow management); use mid-span support if longer panels are required
  • Face sheet: Interior face (cold side) should be stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized for food storage applications; standard aluminum acceptable for non-food frozen storage
  • Fasteners: A2 stainless steel minimum; A4 for interior cold face to resist condensation corrosion

Frequently Asked Questions

What panel thickness do I need for a -18°C freezer?

Standard frozen storage at -18°C typically uses 150mm PIR (U-value ~0.15 W/m2K). Blast freezers down to -30°C use 200mm (~0.11 W/m2K).

Do cold storage panels need a vapor barrier?

Yes. Always specify a vapor barrier on the warm (exterior) side. Without it, water vapor migrates inward, condenses inside the insulation and destroys performance within a few years.

Why use EPDM gaskets at the joints?

Cold storage panels cycle through large temperature differentials. Sealant alone cracks under this thermal cycling, so EPDM compression gaskets are used at all panel joints.
