PVDF coating costs about 8–12% more than ordinary polyester. On a Jeddah facade that takes 12 years of UV and salt air, that’s the gap between a wall that still looks new and one that’s chalking and streaked by year six.
That’s really the whole decision with PVDF aluminium cladding. The aluminium underneath doesn’t rust either way. What you’re paying for is whether the colour survives the climate.
What PVDF actually does
PVDF — sold as Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 — is a fluoropolymer resin. The fluorine-carbon bond is one of the strongest in coatings chemistry, and that’s the entire point: UV light can’t break it down the way it chews through standard polyester. So the pigment stays put.
In numbers that matter on site: a genuine PVDF coating holds its colour and gloss for 20–25 years and clears 3,000+ hours of salt-spray testing. A polyester (SMP) coating starts visibly chalking in Gulf conditions around year five to eight. For a logistics park or a corporate facade where the building owner cares how it looks, that’s not a close call.
Where it’s worth it — and where it isn’t
Coastal and high-UV projects: use PVDF, every time. Jeddah, Dammam, Dubai, Ho Chi Minh City — salt air plus strong sun is exactly what eats polyester.
Inland, low-budget, short-life buildings: SMP is a fair call. A temporary warehouse 200km from the coast that you’ll re-clad in ten years anyway doesn’t need a 25-year coating. Don’t let anyone upsell you PVDF on a building that doesn’t need it.
How to check you’re getting real PVDF
This is where it gets dishonest in the market. “Fluorocarbon coating” on a quote means nothing on its own — it’s a category, not a guarantee. Genuine PVDF is at least 70% PVDF resin content, branded Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000, with a total dry film thickness around 25 microns (20 top coat plus 5 primer).
Ask for the coating data sheet and the resin brand in writing. A supplier who only offers “PVDF coating” with no brand and no percentage is either using a cheaper hybrid or doesn’t know — and on a facade, you find out which in year six.
