Poultry House Roofing: How Insulated Aluminum Panels Cut Heat Stress and Bird Mortality

Heat stress is the single biggest summer killer in broiler and layer houses. When roof surface temperature passes 60°C, the air just under an uninsulated metal roof can run 8–12°C hotter than outside. Birds stop eating, feed conversion drops, and mortality spikes during heat waves. The roof is where most of that heat enters.

Why poultry farms are switching to insulated Great Wall panels

An insulated Great Wall aluminum panel is a one-piece sandwich: a corrugated aluminum outer face, a PU or PIR foam core (50–200mm), and an inner liner. Compared with the single-skin galvanized sheet most poultry houses use today, the difference shows up in three places:

  • Ceiling temperature: with a 75mm PU core (U-value ≈ 0.29 W/m²K), the inner face stays within 2–3°C of house air temperature instead of radiating like a grill.
  • Ammonia corrosion: poultry house air is humid and ammonia-rich, which eats zinc coatings from the inside. Aluminum faces do not rust, so the panel outlives galvanized steel by 15+ years in this environment.
  • Ventilation cost: tunnel fans fight roof heat gain. Farms report meaningfully lower fan run-time after re-roofing with insulated panels.

What thickness do you need?

For hot climates — the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Africa — 75mm PU is the workhorse spec for poultry. Go to 100mm for closed-house systems with evaporative cooling, where every watt of heat gain costs electricity. See our thickness guide for hot climates and the Riyadh project page for typical Gulf farm specs.

Retrofit or new build?

Most orders we ship are retrofits: panels go over existing purlins after the old sheet comes off, usually with no structural change because aluminum sandwich panels weigh less than the concrete-fiber or double-skin systems they replace. Our re-roofing guide covers purlin checks and fastening.

FAQ

Q: Can the panels handle pressure-washing between flocks?
Yes. PVDF-coated aluminum faces take routine high-pressure washdown and disinfectants that would strip painted steel.

Q: What is the fire rating?
Standard PU core is B2; PIR upgrade reaches B1 for farms whose insurers require it.

Q: Minimum order?
One 40ft container, roughly 300–400 m² depending on thickness.
