The FOB price is the number everyone quotes and the number that fools first-time importers. The gap between “$6.20/m² FOB” and what actually lands on your site can be 30–45%. Nobody hides it on purpose — you just have to ask for the whole list, and most buyers don’t know what to ask for.
Here’s the full stack, using a real shape: a 3,000 m² order of 75mm PU Great Wall panel, FOB Tianjin, shipped to a Gulf port. Round numbers, so you can rebuild it for your own project.
What sits on top of the FOB price
Start at the panel: say $6.20/m² FOB, so $18,600 for 3,000 m². Then the additions, roughly in the order they hit you:
Accessories — ridge caps, flashing, trims, screws, sealant. This is 8–12% of panel value and the line most quotes “forget.” Call it $1,800. A roof without flashing isn’t a roof, so this isn’t optional.
Sea freight — a 40ft high-cube runs roughly $1,200–2,500 to most Gulf and SE-Asia ports depending on the month. A 3,000 m² order of 75mm is about 3 containers. Call it $5,400. This number swings with the market — get a live quote, not last year’s.
Insurance — around 0.3–0.5% of cargo value under CIF. Small, maybe $120, but skip it and one wet container erases your whole saving.
Import duty — this is the big variable and it’s entirely your country’s number, not ours. Gulf GCC common tariff is usually 5%; parts of Southeast Asia hit 10–20% unless a free-trade certificate applies. On $18,600 of panel that’s $930 at 5%, or $3,700 at 20%. Our import duty guide by region has the rates, and if you’re in ASEAN buying from China, a Form E certificate can cut that to zero — worth more than any discount we could give you.
Port charges, clearance, local haulage — THC, customs broker, delivery from port to site. Budget $800–1,500 depending on how far inland you are.
So what actually lands?
On that $18,600 FOB panel, you’re realistically at $28,000–31,000 delivered to a Gulf site once accessories, three containers of freight, 5% duty and local charges go on. That’s about +55% over the bare panel number. In a high-duty ASEAN country it’s more. Now compare that against a local double-skin quote on the same total-cost basis — not against the FOB number, which is the mistake that burns people.
Where the factory-direct saving is real, and where it isn’t
Factory-direct still wins on the panel itself — you skip the trading company’s 15–25% markup, which on this order is $3,000–4,500 of pure margin you keep. But it only wins if you’ve costed freight and duty honestly up front. A buyer who compares FOB-to-delivered gets surprised at the port. A buyer who builds the full stack, like the one above, doesn’t. If you want help building it for your exact port and duty situation, our quote-comparison guide walks the line items.
