Hail is the most expensive weather peril for low-slope commercial roofs in large parts of the Middle East highlands, Central Asia and inland Southeast Asia — and insurers increasingly ask for impact ratings before writing the policy. Here is how insulated aluminum panels behave under impact and what to specify.
How a sandwich panel takes a hit
A single-skin sheet dents and stays dented because there is nothing behind it. In a sandwich panel the bonded foam core backs the face continuously, so impact energy spreads instead of concentrating. Result: hail that leaves golf-ball dents in bare sheet typically leaves an insulated panel with shallow cosmetic marks and, crucially, no loss of weather-tightness — the foam and inner liner remain intact even if the outer face is bruised.
What to specify in hail country
- 0.8–1.0mm outer face instead of 0.7mm — the single biggest upgrade for impact.
- Great Wall corrugated profile — the ribs stiffen the face against denting versus flat panels.
- PIR core holds compressive strength (≥150 kPa) slightly better than PU at equal density.
- Insurer requirements: ask whether they want FM 4473 or EN 13583 hail test data and request the certificate up front.
After the storm
Cosmetic denting does not require panel replacement; weathertightness is judged at laps and fasteners. Our installation checklist covers the post-storm inspection sequence. Highland Gulf projects — Taif, and the interior of Saudi Arabia around Mecca — are where we most often quote the 1.0mm face upgrade.
FAQ
Q: Does hail void the coating warranty?
No — PVDF warranties cover chalking and color, and mechanical damage is an insurance matter; the coating does not delaminate at dents.
Q: Is aluminum worse than steel for hail?
At equal thickness steel dents less, but backed by a foam core the difference is minor — and aluminum wins the corrosion decade that follows.
Q: Can single damaged panels be swapped?
Yes, panel-by-panel, which is the practical advantage of through-fix Great Wall profiles.
