Cold Storage Roofing: Insulated Aluminum Panel Specifications for Blast Freezers and Chill Rooms

Cold storage and blast freezer facilities have the most demanding roofing requirements of any industrial building. The panels must maintain interior temperatures as low as -30°C while the exterior is exposed to 40°C+ ambient temperatures in the Middle East and Southeast Asia — a delta of 70°C or more. Getting the specification wrong results in energy loss, condensation damage, and food safety risk. This guide covers the correct approach.

Why Standard Warehouse Panels Are Not Suitable for Cold Storage

  • Vapor drive: In a warm-exterior / cold-interior situation, warm humid air is constantly trying to move into the cold space. Standard 75mm panels do not provide sufficient vapor resistance — moisture penetrates the panel joints over time, reducing insulation performance and causing structural degradation.
  • Thermal bridging: Standard Great Wall roof panels have aluminum faces that conduct heat. In cold storage, you need to specify panels with thermal break fasteners and minimized bridging at joints.
  • Condensation at joints: Panel-to-panel joints in cold storage must be sealed with vapor-barrier tape and thermal break foam. Our cold storage panels include these details as standard.

Critical Details for Cold Storage Panel Installation

  • Vapor barrier tape: All panel-to-panel joints must be sealed with butyl vapor barrier tape on both faces — not just the interior. We supply the tape with each cold storage order.
  • Thermal break fasteners: Use nylon-sleeved or thermal-break fasteners at purlins to eliminate metal-to-metal conduction pathways.
  • No exposed fasteners on the interior face: Fastener heads on the interior (cold side) create condensation points. Specify blind fastening systems or concealed clip fixings for -25°C and below applications.
  • Joint foam closure: Ridge and eave terminations must use closed-cell PE foam closures, not the standard open-cell foam used in ambient warehouse applications.
  • Door frames: Panel termination at door frames must include a thermal break jamb — a standard steel door frame directly in contact with the cold panel creates significant heat gain and condensation.
