The Verdict for Middle East and Southeast Asia Projects
For the vast majority of industrial roofing in hot climates, insulated aluminum panels are the clear choice. The thermal insulation gap is decisive: a polycarbonate roof in a Dubai warehouse essentially acts as a greenhouse, driving cooling loads to levels that make the building economically unviable for temperature-sensitive operations.
Where polycarbonate makes sense: Rooflights (5–10% of roof area) for natural illumination in otherwise opaque aluminum panel roofs. The hybrid approach — aluminum panels for thermal performance, polycarbonate ridge or skylight strips for daylight — is the standard solution for warehouses requiring both insulation and natural light.
Where polycarbonate fails in hot climates: As the primary roofing material, polycarbonate’s U-value of 2.5–3.5 W/m²K means the roof adds significant cooling load in summer. At 45°C ambient, a 10,000 m² polycarbonate roof transfers roughly 250 kW of heat into the building continuously — equivalent to running 80 residential split air conditioners just to offset roof heat gain.
