Why Getting the Quantity Right Matters More Than You Think
Under-ordering means you’re waiting for a second container while the structure sits exposed — typically 30–45 days additional delay. Over-ordering by 20%+ means paying for panels you’ll never use and a storage problem on site. Here’s how to calculate precisely.
Step 1: Calculate Gross Roof Area
Measure the building footprint (plan area), then adjust for roof pitch:
| Roof Pitch | Pitch Factor | Example: 5,000m² footprint |
|---|---|---|
| 3° (flat/low) | 1.001 | 5,005 m² |
| 5° | 1.004 | 5,020 m² |
| 10° | 1.015 | 5,075 m² |
| 15° | 1.035 | 5,175 m² |
Step 2: Calculate Net Panel Coverage
Great Wall aluminum panels have a nominal width (e.g., 1,000mm) but the effective cover width is reduced by the interlock. Typical coverage widths:
- Nominal 1,000mm panel → effective cover width 960–970mm
- Nominal 1,150mm panel → effective cover width 1,100mm
Panel quantity formula:
Number of panels = Roof width ÷ Effective cover width (round up to nearest whole number)
Total panel area ordered = Number of panels × Panel length
Step 3: Add Waste Factor
- Simple rectangular roof: Add 3–5% for end cuts and damaged panels
- Hip roof or irregular shape: Add 8–12% for diagonal cuts
- Re-roofing over existing structure: Add 5–8% — old structures are rarely perfectly true
Worked Example: 10,000m² Warehouse, 5° Pitch
Building: 100m × 100m footprint, dual-pitch roof, 5° pitch, 1,000mm nominal panels (960mm cover width)
- Gross roof area: 10,000 × 1.004 (pitch factor) = 10,040 m²
- Each run of panels: 100m (eave to ridge) → use 6m panels → 17 panels per run (last panel cut)
- Panels across 100m width: 100,000mm ÷ 960mm = 105 panels per run
- Total panels: 17 × 105 × 2 roof faces = 3,570 panels
- Total area: 3,570 × (1.0m × 6m) = 21,420 m² gross panel area
- Add 5% waste: 21,420 × 1.05 = 22,491 m² to order
Always provide your panel supplier with the building drawings — most factories offer a free panel layout drawing service that gives you exact quantities, optimized panel lengths to minimize waste, and a cutting list.
