Aluminium Hygiene Cladding for Food and Cold Storage: Washdown, Corrosion and Fire

Food factories, cold stores and clean rooms use aluminium-faced insulated panels and hygiene cladding because aluminium is food-grade, tolerates chlorine washdown and disinfectants, and does not rust in the constant humidity that corrodes galvanised steel from the inside. Combined with a PU/PIR or mineral-wool core, aluminium-faced panels give a hygienic, insulated, fire-rated envelope in one component — the reason they are specified for temperature-controlled food and pharma buildings.

Why aluminium faces suit hygiene areas

Food and pharma areas are washed down with chlorinated water and disinfectants and run humid or cold. That environment rusts galvanised steel from the cut edges and inside out within years. Aluminium faces do not rust, are food-grade, and wipe clean, so the wall and ceiling stay hygienic and intact through daily washdown for decades.

The panel that does three jobs

An insulated (Great Wall) panel bonds aluminium faces to a PU/PIR or mineral-wool core. In one component it gives a cleanable hygienic surface, the insulation a chill room or freezer needs (100mm for chill, 150mm for −18°C, 200mm for −30°C blast), and a fire rating. Tongue-and-groove joints remove the thermal bridges that cause condensation and ice.

Fire and clean-room grade

Where a non-combustible core is required, mineral-wool-core aluminium-faced panels meet A1/A2. Clean rooms add flush details, coved trims and sealed joints for particle control. Specify the core (PU/PIR for thermal, mineral wool for fire), the face (food-grade aluminium), joint type and any clean-room classification up front.

Doors, trims and a sealed envelope

A hygienic envelope is only as good as its details: matched insulated cold-room doors, coved floor and ceiling trims, and sealed penetrations. Order doors and trims with the panels so thickness and finish match and the room seals correctly. Aluminium trims carry the same no-rust, washdown advantage as the panel faces.

Frequently asked questions

Why use aluminium cladding in food plants? Aluminium is food-grade, tolerates chlorine washdown and disinfectants, and does not rust in humid, cold washdown environments that corrode galvanised steel.

What core thickness for cold storage? About 100mm for chill rooms, 150mm for −18°C freezers and 200mm for −30°C blast freezers.

Can hygiene panels be non-combustible? Yes — mineral-wool-core aluminium-faced panels meet A1/A2 where a non-combustible core is required.

Do you supply matching doors and trims? Yes — matched insulated cold-room doors and coved trims ship with the panels so the room seals and the finishes match.
