What a honeycomb panel is
An aluminium honeycomb panel has two aluminium skins bonded to an aluminium honeycomb core, like a lightweight structural sandwich. The core gives high stiffness for very little weight, so panels stay dead flat over large spans where ACP would show waviness. Because the whole panel is aluminium, there is no combustible core.
Where honeycomb beats ACP
Large-format panels (metres across) that must read perfectly flat; prestige facades and interiors where any oil-canning is unacceptable; and projects needing a non-combustible (A2) panel without a mineral-filled ACP core. Honeycomb also handles curved and shaped panels well. For these, honeycomb is worth the premium.
Where ACP is the right call
For standard commercial cladding at normal panel sizes, ACP (FR core for facades) gives the look at a much lower cost and is easier to fold into cassettes on site. Most projects are ACP; honeycomb is the upgrade for flatness, size or fire. Do not pay for honeycomb where FR ACP does the job.
Cost, weight and specifying
Honeycomb costs more per m² than ACP but is light and rigid; ACP is cheaper and thinner. To quote honeycomb, give panel size, total thickness, skin gauge, PVDF colour and fire requirement. For a mixed facade you can use honeycomb on the large feature panels and FR ACP elsewhere, colour-matched, to control budget.
