Most buyers ask about PIR density and coating type — but fire classification is what insurance companies, project engineers, and local authorities actually require in writing. Getting this wrong means panels that pass your quality check but fail the building permit.

FM 4880: The GCC Standard

FM 4880 is the Factory Mutual approval standard for “Building Materials and Systems” — specifically for insulated metal panels used in roofing and wall applications. It tests fire propagation in large-scale fire scenarios (not just small bench tests) and is the most demanding standard for insulated panels.

FM 4880 Class 1 approved panels are required by many GCC insurers for warehouses storing flammable or high-value goods. Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and major logistics operators typically specify FM 4880 Class 1 in their engineering standards.

To achieve FM 4880 Class 1 with PIR panels: PIR density must be ≥ 42 kg/m³, aluminum face sheet ≥ 0.5mm, and the specific panel profile must have passed the FM 4880 large-scale test — not just the foam material alone. EN 13501-1: European Classification

EN 13501-1 classifies building products on a scale from A1 (non-combustible) to F (no performance determined). For PIR insulated aluminum panels:

  • B-s2,d0 — achievable with PIR core + aluminum faces; good fire performance, limited smoke, no burning droplets. Suitable for most industrial applications.
  • C-s2,d0 — typical for EPS core panels; acceptable smoke, no droplets, but faster flame spread
  • D-s3,d2 — unclassified EPS panels; burning droplets possible, not acceptable for occupied buildings

What GCC Projects Actually Require

GCC civil defense and municipality requirements vary by country and project type, but general guidance:

  • Saudi Arabia: SASO 2093 references FM standards for industrial buildings. Aramco/SABIC projects mandate FM 4880 Class 1.
  • UAE: Dubai Civil Defence and Abu Dhabi DM require fire test reports. FM 4880 Class 1 or EN 13501-1 Class B accepted for most warehouse applications.
  • Kuwait: Ministry of Interior fire regulations reference international standards. FM 4880 Class 1 strongly preferred by insurers.

When in doubt, specify FM 4880 Class 1 — it meets or exceeds all other standards in the region and satisfies insurance requirements universally.
