What the inspection covers

For coil, they confirm gauge, width and coil condition. You get a photo report and a pass/hold result.
Who does it and roughly what it costs
SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas and TÜV are the common independents; there are good regional agencies too. A single-visit PSI on one container is a modest fixed fee — small next to the value of the goods. Book it a few days before the planned ship date so the goods are finished and packed for the inspector to check.
Tying it to payment
The point of PSI is leverage: structure payment so a chunk (often the balance after deposit) is released only after a passing inspection report. That gives you a real check before the goods leave China, when it is still easy to fix. A confident factory has no problem with third-party inspection — reluctance is a warning sign.
