We sell these panels. So take this the way you’d take a mechanic telling you your car doesn’t need the repair — it means more because it costs us the sale.
There are projects where insulated aluminum Great Wall panels are the wrong call, and a supplier who won’t tell you that is just trying to close you. Here are the times we tell buyers to walk away.
Your building is heated, in a cold climate, and the budget is thin
If you’re roofing a warehouse in a place that freezes hard and stays cheap on labor, a job-built roof with loose-fill insulation can beat a factory sandwich panel on first cost. Sandwich panels win when heat gain, condensation, corrosion or install speed matter. If none of those bite you and you just need a dry box, don’t pay for engineering you won’t use.
Where they earn their price is hot and humid climates, cold storage, and anywhere corrosion eats steel. If that’s not you, be honest with yourself about it.
You need a fire wall between occupancies
A standard PU core is B2. Even the PIR upgrade is B1, not non-combustible. If your local code or insurer demands a fire-rated separating wall — A1/A2 non-combustible — a foam-core panel does not meet it, full stop. That’s a mineral wool (rockwool) core panel or a masonry wall. We make rockwool panels too, but the point stands: don’t let anyone sell you PIR into a compartment wall. The order is tiny
One container is roughly 300–400 m² depending on thickness. If your job is 120 m² — a small canopy, a guardhouse, a shed extension — importing from China makes no sense. Sea freight, customs clearance and the minimum production run swamp any factory-price saving. Buy locally, even at a higher per-metre price. We’ll tell you the same on the phone.
You can’t verify the supplier and you can’t inspect
This one’s about the whole category, us included. Buying insulated panels from a China factory you’ve never audited, with no pre-shipment inspection and no third-party test report, is a real risk — foam density gets cut, aluminum faces get thinned to 0.4mm, coatings get downgraded. If you have no way to check any of that, the cheapest quote is a trap. Either get an inspection agent involved (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) or buy from someone local you can visit. When they ARE the right answer
For the record, so this isn’t all caveats: hot-climate warehouses, cold storage, coastal buildings, livestock housing, and any roof where corrosion or energy cost matters over a 25-year life — that’s where aluminum sandwich panels pay back.
