Aluminium Coil and Panel Storage, Handling and Shipping: Avoiding Oxidation and Damage

Store PVDF aluminium coil and panels dry, flat and off the ground, keep the protective film on until installation, and never stack coils or panels where trapped moisture can cause water staining. Aluminium does not rust, but trapped water between coil wraps or stacked sheets leaves white oxidation stains that ruin the finish. Most facade defects are handling, not manufacturing — here is how to protect the material from factory to fixed.

The real enemy: trapped water, not rust

Aluminium forms a protective oxide, so it will not rust — but water trapped between coil wraps or between stacked panels sits against the surface and causes white “water staining” (surface oxidation) that shows on a finished facade. Keep material dry, ventilated and tilted so water drains, and never wrap warm coil in plastic that then sweats.

Storing coil and panels correctly

Store indoors, dry and off the floor on timber bearers. Keep coils eye-to-sky or in cradles as the mill packed them; do not stand a heavy coil on a point. Stack panels flat and fully supported, interleaved as delivered, with the heaviest at the bottom — a panel stored on two edge supports will bow. Leave the protective film on until fixed.

Handling without denting or oil-canning

Lift panels by the edges with clean gloves; a thumb press on a thin skin dents it. Do not drag sheets over each other — grit scratches the coating under the film. For cassettes, carry on edge, not flat, to avoid oil-canning the face. Any bend or crease in a folded panel is permanent, so plan lifts before you start.

Shipping and site care

For export, coil ships in cradles and panels in crates; confirm the packing withstands the sea voyage and forklift handling. On site, keep the protective film on through installation and remove it soon after — film left months in UV bakes onto the coating and becomes hard to peel. Clean off any site dust with water, never abrasives.

Frequently asked questions

Does aluminium coil rust in storage? No — aluminium does not rust, but trapped water causes white oxidation “water staining”. Store dry, ventilated and tilted so water drains.

Should I leave the protective film on? Yes, until installation is complete — but remove it soon after, as film left in UV for months bakes on and is hard to peel.

How should panels be stacked? Flat and fully supported, heaviest at the bottom, interleaved as delivered — never on two edge supports, which bows them.

How do I clean site dust off panels? With water and a soft cloth. Never use abrasives or harsh solvents, which scratch or dull the PVDF coating.
